AMID Motorcycle Show

A boost for the industry

The Association of Motorcycle Importers and Distributors (AMiD) is confident its upcoming show will provide a boost to sales in an industry that is still recovering from the effects of the global economic downturn in 2008/9.

This is the opinion of AMiD’s national director, Réhann Coetzee.

“The AMiD Show has been held at a number of venues over the years and in 2011 it formed part of the Johannesburg Motor Show, but now it will benefit from three shows being co-hosted at Expo Centre at the same time, so we are hopeful of large crowds of visitors,” said Coetzee. “The other shows will be the Johannesburg Boat Show and theOutdoor Lifestyle Show, which will fit in well with our motorcycle and quad displays.”

A bit of a display

The Le Riche Brothers, Bruce and Brent, will put on a spectacular, world class extreme stunt riding display as part of the entertainment at the AMiD Motorcycle Show to be staged at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, from August 24-26. These two, highly skilled riders have been thrilling crowds not only in South Africa, but also internationally.

Bruce competed in North America for four years and had a best placing as runner-up in the overall championship. He has also been rated No. 1 in SA on two occasions. His brother, Brent, competed in North America for two years and contested the SA motorcycle trials championship on nine occasions. Both brothers have performed in Spain and England.

They use a specially-built truck and trailer for the majority of their breathtaking stunts, but also have the world’s first and only trials rollover motorcycle rig, which they will be using as part of their 30 minute show at Expo Centre. They have also revised the rear ramp on their truck to make for a 3,5-metre undercut step, which will be a real challenge of their riding skill.

A chance to win

Visitors to the AMiD motorcycle show at Expo Centre, Nasrec, will have a chance of winning a brand new KTM 125 Duke with a helmet and goggles. The value of the prize is more than R40 000.

All those buying a ticket for the show, which is co-hosted with the Johannesburg Boat Show and Outdoor Lifestyle shows, will qualify to enter the completion by filling in a form and putting it in a box on the KTM stand.

The draw for the winner of the KTM 125 Duke will be made on the Sunday afternoon (August 26). Ten finalists will be selected on each of the Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with those people who entered on Friday and Saturday being phoned to tell them they are in the final and that they must be present at the draw on the Sunday to be in line for the prize.

KTM will display its full range of on- and off-road motorcycles on its stand, as well as featuring the 125 Duke that will be the competition prize.

Johannesburg Boat Show

A Honda

The newly-introduced Honda BF250 outboard engine will headline Honda’s stand at the Johannesburg Boat Show.

The new V6 engine, displacing 3,6 litres, sees Honda move up a power class with this offering, and the new engine boasts impressive new technologies.

Chief amongst these is Honda’s patented Direct Air Induction system, the first time it is being use for an outboard motor, which has the effect of reducing intake charge temperatures, resulting in more power, better fuel consumption, and cooler running.

A Suzuki

Major technological innovations that are revolutionary in the boating world will take centre-stage at Suzuki’s stand at the Johannesburg Boat Show.

First amongst these global innovations is Suzuki’s new DF20A with ground-breaking battery-less fuel injection, which gives the motor a far smoother power delivery with an almost complete absence of vibration.

The world’s first outboard battery-less injected motor in the 15/20 hp class offers battery-less starting, class-leading low fuel consumption, and an excellent spread of low speed torque ensuring rapid acceleration without compromising fuel economy. The engine is also noted for its impressively low idling speed.

A Lowrance chart

The super-detailed Platinum + Fishing Data deep-sea chart will be launched at Lowrance South Africa’s stand at the Johannesburg Boat Show.

The new Fishing Data Enhancement chart is compatible with the acclaimed Lowrance range of stand-alone GPS and combo units.

What is even more exciting is that Southern African anglers will be the first in the world to get this latest version.

A Fun Boat!

St Francis Marine, the boat-building concern based in one of the most sought-after beach communities on the South African coast, will be showing its new St Francis Fun Boat to Gauteng marine enthusiasts for the first time at the Johannesburg Boat Show.

The manufacturers of the acclaimed St Francis 50 Catamaran say their Fun Boat will offer identical levels of design excellence, construction and functionality.

In order to achieve the design objective of a shallow draft, low wake boat, the hull was constructed with specific attention to detail. Rather than a plaining boat, the St Francis Fun Boat with its fine bows has been designed to gently slice through the water. A third “mini hull” creates extra buoyancy aft, allowing it to glide over shallow sandbanks.

This adaption also makes use of “surface effect”, wherein a dam of air between the hulls is compressed, which translates into lift, further reducing the wetted surface area, (rather like a hovercraft). Due to this design characteristic, this craft goes faster into the wind than with it, reducing fuel consumption and providing an impressive turn of speed.

“This boat is ideal for dams and rivers as well as the ocean,” says Jaco Hamman, Production Manager at St Francis Marine.” For this reason we are really looking to the Johannesburg Boat Show, where we will be able to interact with Gauteng-based boaters. A number of our staff are very familiar with the particular attractions of Harties, and the Vaal Dam.”

Hamman says that because the Fun Boat is of a modular design, the customers are able to create the exact boat configuration tailored to specific needs. It will also to be possible to order different modules later in the boat’s life-cycle and change it according to changing needs.

A 5.8 million rand yacht

An Atlantis 38 Open-Class Power Yacht, one of the most desirable boats in the world, is set to be the star attraction at the Johannesburg Boat Show.

The 11,62 -metre craft, built in Italy, is priced at a cool R5,8-million. It will take centre stage in an exhibition timed to welcome the summer months that lie ahead of South Africans with leisure-seeking at the top of their must-do lists.

“I have heard the Atlantis 38 described as the upgrade to end all upgrades,” said John Broderick, CEO of Vanderbijlpark watercraft specialists, Broderick Marine, importers of the Atlantis range in South Africa.

“With its sliding, retractable glass roof, superb attention to every-on-board detail, and potent dual Volvo stern-drive motors, this is indeed the ultimate for boating both in the inland regions, and on the ocean.”

Other features of the exquisitely-finished boat include berthing for four adults, a retractable table that can be converted into a sun-lounger, a galley, an L-shaped saloon, and a shape that is evocative of power, grace and extreme agility.
