Mercedes-Benz could be offering its bakkie, which is still a few years away from launch, in three models from work horse to luxury truck. Earlier rumours suggested that it would be called the GLT but now as reported by Australia’s CarAdvice, an insider claims that X-Class or Z-Class is a more likely fit.
The Merc bakkie will share a platform with the Nissan NP300 Navara but everything else including design will be done by Mercedes. The base model will have few frills, optional all-wheel drive and make use of a 2.3-litre four-cyclinder diesel engine delivering about 140kW. The mid-level version will have the same engine but the vehicle will have more features, while the top of the range will have a six-cylinder diesel with an output of around 190kW and a whack-load of luxury features.
The company plans to build them in Spain and Argentina and the bakkies are set to compete against the Volkswagen Amarok and Ford Ranger in markets like Europe, Australia, and Latin America. We will have to wait and see if it makes its way to our shores.
