A one-off convertible Hyundai Santa Fe Popemobile has been built, which will be used to transport Pope Francis.
Pope Francis made his appearance in the new Hyundai Santa Fe Popemobile during his weekly appearance in St Peter’s Square.
Traditionally, some form of Mercedes-Benz has been used to act as Popemobile, but a roofless Hyundai Santa Fe has now been given the auspicious task of transport the Pope.
Unlike previous Popemobiles, the Hyundai Santa Fe is quite low and narrow, which should make it easier to navigate through the thick crowds that tend to greet an appearance by Pope Francis.
The vehicle has two front seats, and three in the rear. Rear passengers exit with the help a side door with a retractable step.
The new Popemobile is based on a pre-facelift Santa Fe with the standard 2,2-litre Hyundai CRDi oilburner under the bonnet.
