Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has added a special edition model to its range of Triton 4×4 double-cab bakkies, dubbed the Triton Athlete.
Mitsubishi calls the new Triton Athlete “sportier than double-cab counterparts,” however this sportiness is largely to do with the orange and black exterior styling kit and interior design cues that jazz up the Athlete. Underneath the orange and black trim you’ll find a body colour of either white or grey.
The Athlete gains black powder-coated diamond-cut 17-inch alloys, a sports bar and an integrated tailgate spoiler. Dark-grey and orange decals with black highlights are found on the side steps, door mirrors, door handles, rear bumper and new tailgate.
The orange highlights and black mouldings can be found on the new front bumper, new black grille” with honeycomb mesh” and on the front and rear bumpers and the wheel arches.
It also gains a Tonneau (or armadillo) load box cover and there is an additional a range of manufacturer’s approved accessories available from dealers.
Beside the looks, the Athlete does come with an upgraded towing capacity of a claimed 3.1 tons (up from 1.5 tons).
Inside
Orange stitching can be found on the black leather seats, steering wheel, gear lever, door panels and the centre console.
The Triton Athlete comes with Bi-xenon HID headlamps, daytime running lights a, multifunction steering wheel, shift paddles, an upgraded instrument display, a smart-key system and automatic dual-zone air-conditioning.
Over-and-above the standard safety features found on the Triton 4×4 such as ABS with EBD, Brake Assist (BA), Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC), Hill-start Assist (HSA) and Super Select 4WD-II 4WD system, the Athlete gains seven airbags and Isofix child seat anchors.
Under the hood
There are no changes under the bonnet, the Titon Athlete is powered by the same 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine that produces 133kW of power at 3 500 r/min and 430Nm of torque at 2 500 r/min as the standard Triton Double-Cab 4×4, linked to a five-speed automatic transmission
The special edition is assembled in Mitsubishi’s Thailand factory and imported to South Africa. The new derivative has been launched at the same retail price, of R559 995, as the standard Triton Double-Cab 4×4 automatic derivative.
