The base Trendline model costs R378 000 and is fitted with a four-cylinder, turbocharged engine that boasts 92kW and 200Nm, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The Comfortline derivative, which uses the same powertrain but comes with more standard features, is priced at R419 000.

The current top of the range Comfortline DSG derivative comes with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission,  while the engine delivers 110kW and 250Nm. This variant is priced at R457 680.

Later this year, the 2.0 TDI engines with 81kW, 105kW and 130kW as well as the 2.0 TSI with 162kW will be introduced. These engines will be offered with Volkswagen’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive system as standard.

This second generation Tiguan has a five star Euro NCAP rating and is fitted with driver and front passenger airbags, an airbag curtain system and front seat side impact airbags. Hazard lights flash automatically under hard braking, while Electronic Stability Control, XDS transverse differential lock and fatigue detection (Rest Assist) are all standard.

Completely redesigned, the interior is 26mm longer than previously and the new Tiguan gains, among other things, a significant amount of boot space. The adjustable rear bench rear seat can slide backwards or forwards by up to 18 cms to increase either rear legroom, or boot space. When the rear bench is folded the cargo space, at 1 655 litres, is now 145 litres larger than before.
