According to India’s Economic Times newspaper, Tata is getting close to producing its own SUV based on the Freelander 2.
This rumour has been going around for years, and it does make sense, since Tata of course owns Land Rover, it would have access to the underpinnings of the Freelander. But it seems as if things are now actually happening.
The newspaper states that no less than 45 engineers are currently working on the project, and that we could see it on showroom floors by 2016/2017.
Interestingly, though, the report also adds that “the SUV is likely to be 50-85% different from the existing Freelander, but it will have the genes of a Land Rover with JLR quality.”
