Volkswagen debuts the Atlas Weekend Edition concept at the Chicago Auto Show, while the regular seven-seat Atlas SUV will be going on sale in the US in a few months time.
The Weekend Edition concept is basically an Atlas crossover based on the SEL Premium model, fitted with a 208kW 3.6-litre VR6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
On top the Atlas is fitted with what Volkswagen refers to as an Urban Loader. This cargo carrier is a hard-shell box with soft sides that expand to swallow 500 litres of luggage. Steps have been added to the side of the vehicle and base carrier bars for attaching accessories for skis, snowboards, kayaks or bikes.
There are two tablet mounts that attach to the front headrests to face the rear passengers and also VW accessories that include a cargo divider, all-weather rubber mats, splashguards and wheel locks.
The new Atlas will be built at the Volkswagen Chattanooga assembly plant in Tennessee as a left-hand drive vehicle and won’t be making it to our shores.
