This is a 1960 Willys Surrey Gala and no, this is not some strange ice-cream truck vendor’s fantasy ride, this is what they really looked like back in the day.
These Jeeps were produced between 1959 and 1964 and based on the DJ-3A Dispatcher. The Dispatcher was used by the US Postal service…until it wasn’t ( when the contract came to an end).
So what to do with the left over Jeeps and parts? Well, the owner of Willys-Overland, Henry Kaiser, had businesses in and later retired to Hawaii, so it’s not surprising that the vehicles where converted into cheep run-arounds for hotels, resorts and shops on Hawaii and the in Caribbean.
They came in two colours: pink with pink and white candy-cane trim or blue and with blue and white candy-cane trim.
This particular one going up for auction at the RM Sotheby’s sale in Scottsdale, Arizona, this coming January.
