The 2017 Dakar has started… and South African-built cars claimed the top three positions in the first stage! The super-fast Nasser Al-Attiyah won the stage in his Toyota Hilux, but an engine fire at the end of the stage put a slight damper on his victory (we hear from the team that the problem that caused the fire is an easy fix though). Xavier Pons finished second in the locally made Ford Ranger, but he later received a penalty for speeding in a village and will drop down the leader board. And former Dakar winner Nani Roma, in another Toyota Hilux, finished in third position. Our man Giniel de Villiers was in a cool and calculated fifth… there’s still a long, long way to go.
