LandCruisers form part of a mobile network

2 June 2016

Much like our Richtersveld, the Australian Outback is a wild and inhospitable place and there is no cell phone reception or WIFI networks available.

Toyota has created a roaming LandCruiser Emergency Network in the Outback designed for situations like medical emergencies or disaster response and will be monitoring its success for potential use in other countries.

Saatchi and Flinders University partnered with Toyota to build a cylindrical device that can be fitted onto Toyota LandCruisers, which are one of the most popular vehicles found in the Outback and these relay signals to one another like a giant mesh network. The cars essentially function as hotspots, bouncing calls or messages from vehicle to vehicle until it reaches a base station.
