New BMW X1 sees smaller entry level car
BMW has made a tweak or two on their highly popular X1 crossover. We recently featured the X1 in our FUV shootout – proving its popularity further. Let’s take a look at what has changed on the new X1, available in September this year.
What’s new – Exterior
While the exterior changes are only minor, one can’t help but notice a general difference in appearance. The tweaks to the fog lights, the front apron, headlights, plastics around the base of the car, underguard and slightly different paintwork have all come together to make for an overall more aggressive-looking vehicle. By aggressive, all we really mean is chunky. BMW seems to be moving away from the softer, city image, ‘station wagon’ side of the crossover and more to the supposed ‘SUV’ functionality (see pictures above as well).
What’s new – Interior
On the interior the changes are equally menial, but we won’t pass judgement until we’ve held the new (optional) sports leather steering wheel in our hands. The centre console is said to be new, as are the more ‘luxurious’ interior finishes. Watch this space, and we’ll let you know if it’s all as good as it sounds.
Trims
Either way, since we quite enjoyed the X1 with the M Sport package (there’s more bite in that predominantly practical car than you’d imagine), we’re delighted that this package is still available on all the X1 derivatives.
Other trims include BMW xLine and Sport Line, as well as BMW Lines – apparently an alternative to the basic trim – available on the X1 for the first time.
What’s new – Derivatives
New at the bottom
Here we see the biggest change, with an sDrive 16d joining the line-up with only 85kW (xDrive, being the all wheel drive derivative, and sDrive the rear-wheel drive BMW standard derivative). Torque on the baby-beast is reportedly 260 Nm at 1 750 – 3 000 rpm, with BMW certainly on point with the downsizing trend (assuming the pricing will range accordingly). Then, a new xDrive/sDrive 18d joins the line-up with 105kW and 320Nm of torque.
New at the top
A new 160kW-producing xDrive25d now tops the diesel range, where previously the big boy of the diesels was the 23d auto with 150kW. The company further says that they’ve enhanced the performance of the s and xDrive 20d (see specs below), and that transmission-wise a new manual ‘box with a dry sump is available, as well as an eight-speed auto ‘box.
The 28i still tops the petrol range with 180kW – no changes there.
Save for the sDrive18i, sDrive16d and sDrive20d Efficient Dynamics Edition, all derivatives are available with auto start-stop as an extra.
