Historic 959 Paris-Dakar Porsche sells for nearly R85 million

One of the six Porsche 959 Paris-Dakar models recently went up for sale at RM Sotheby’s 70th Anniversary auction.

Experts estimated that it would end up selling for somewhere between R40 million to R50 million, but the car actually exceeded expectation.

It ended up selling for nearly twice that.

The 959 was built for the infamous Group B championship, which ended up being canned due to it being so dangerous. So Porsche decided to enter the Paris-Dakar instead.

Only six were built, each equipped with a naturally-aspirated flat six engine.
