Stage 4
While Al-Attiyah kept shaving time off leader Peterhansel in stage four, it wasn’t yet enough to take the lead. Peterhansel remains first while De Villiers finishes the stage in third position, Al-Attiyah winning one place.
De Villiers may have been happy to gain a place after Lucio Alvarez experienced problems, but Leonid Novitskiy finished just 26 seconds behind him and is putting the South African under great pressure.
Sainz again dropped out of the top 10, as organisers controversially reversed their order from stage three and put back the 20 minutes he lost on stage two looking for a waypoint. Further electronic issues on his buggy forced him to stop even more on this stage, and it doesn’t look good for the Red Bull competitor. The reversal of the ruling was due to the availability of a second GPS which could have been used to validate the waypoints the first had failed to find.
Another crash at the 2013 Dakar Rally came as Robby Gordon – in 13th place at the time – rolled his Hummer 32 kilometers into the stage. The American competitor was not hurt.
