January 2016 Issue

This month we take nine bakkies into the rocks and sands of Namibia. The Nissan Navara, Toyota Hilux, VW Amarok, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu KB, GWM Steed, Fonton Tunland, Ford Ranger and Tata Xenon all got put through their paces.

We also find out if the VW Amarok 2.0BiTDI 4Motion D/C can get from Joburg to Cape Town on just one 80-litre tank of diesel.

The Toyota Land Cruiser has always been larger than life and now that the 200 has had a mid-life makeover it looks rather ‘flash’. So we did the logical thing and took the R1.5-million VX with all its chrome to the Hennops Off-Road trail and did some serious 4×4 driving.

For something a little different, we loaded some bikes onto a Thule bike rack at the back of the Volvo V60 Cross Country and went for a mountain biking countryside jaunt, in the Durbanville wine valley. We found this sporty Swede to be a capable rough roader but definitely not a hardcore 4×4.

Finally, we took our long-term Subaru Outback up the Sani Pass one last time before the pass gets the asphalt treatment.
