September 2016 Issue

This is the month of leviathans as we spent some time behind the wheel of a fairly extensively modified Jeep Wrangler with a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine and we even included a monstrous Toyota Land Cruiser. This edition also heralds the first-ever Jaguar to appear inside the pages of Leisure Wheels. Carrying the F-Pace moniker, we drove it on its local launch.

Our usual content kicks off with the 250K Challenge, where we enlisted the help of SA racing legend Hannes Grobler, to determine if it’s possible to buy a decent second-hand 4×4 for the same price as a new Suzuki Jimny.

The adventure segment includes a trip to Namibia in the updated Renault Duster where it was faced with an unthinkable challenge – conquering the biggest dunes the Namib desert can throw its way.

The lads also stretched the legs of the facelifted Volvo V40 Cross Country in an attempt to spot Africa’s big five in Limpopo. On the journey it faced rain, snow, gravel, mud and searing heat in an attempt to prove adventure is not necessarily found on uncharted stretches of road.

In the technology section we take a breath of fresh air with the installation of a snorkel and take a closer look at the live traffic reports offered by some increasingly smart GPS units on page 80.

We visited the scenic De Wildt 4×4 trail just outside Hartbeespoort and participated in a media 4×4 challenge in the Pajero Legend II. Finally, though, we realized that it machined doesn’t get much tougher than the Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406 in our Retro Drive section.
