Buy a road-legal Ford MK2 Escort rally car

The MK2 Ford Escort is a legend, mostly thanks to its well-recorded success on the international rally scene.

Unfortunately, that success has turned it into an icon, which means it comes with a price tag to match. A decent example costs the equivalent of R1.4 million in the UK.

But now there is a new way to get your hands on a MK2 in full rally specification.

A company called Great British Sports Cars teamed up with MK2 bodyshell supplier, Motorsport Tools, to build MK2 Escort rally replicas that are fully road legal.

This replica features a 2.5-litre petrol engine, which they claim produces more than 140kW. The power is transferred to the rear wheels via a six-speed Mazda manual gearbox.

Naturally, a roll cage and a modern braking system are standard as well.

A release date hasn’t been set yet, but the asking price is expected to be R1.2 million.

That’s not exactly a bargain, but still cheaper than paying R1.4 for the real thing.
