Stage 6
Stage 6 was the bumper stage of the Dakar Rally for 2013, and the first day Leisure Wheels contributing editor Danie Botha joined the press following the rally. A total of 774km was covered yesterday, with 483 of that off-road.
Al-Attiyah continued to do well, winning his first rally stage and closing in on Peterhansel’s lead. Al-Attiyah is now only 1:18 behind the French driver, after his navigator guided them through a rough and risky – but shorter – route than many others dared take.
Sainz’ troubles continued with engine failure resulting in an early retirement from a disappointing Dakar for him, and rumours are the Spanish driver is not keen on returning to the Dakar.
Robby Gordon was the surprise performer of the day finishing third in the stage, despite being just under six hours behind leader Peterhansel in the Rally overall.
