GWM has introduced its M4 compact crossover to the SA market.
The M4 is basically a funkier looking version of the C20 R, which was well received by SA’s motoring journalists when it was launched a few months ago.
“The M4 is a groundbreaking vehicle for us, and actually creates an entirely new sub-niche in the crossover segment,” said GWM South Africa COO Warren Olsen. “It is smaller than vehicles such as the Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster, but offers more standard features and a very attractive sticker price. On the other hand it is also more obviously SUV-themed than cross-hatches such as our own C20R and the VW Vivo Maxx, so in effect it slots in between these two segments.”
Obviously the main feature on this car is the styling, and we can’t help but like it. It’s cheeky, aggressive and has an impressive stance thanks to those stylish 16-inch alloy wheels. The M4 is offered in SA in a choice of six colours; Fashion Orange, Titanium White, Sky Silver, Pearl Black, Jazz Red and Ocean Blue.
On the inside you get a sporty instrument cluster with overlapping dials and an integrated digital speedometer display. Other standard features include air-conditioning, electric windows and an audio system with USB, auxiliary and Bluetooth connectivity. Safety is taken care of by ABS, EBD, dual front airbags and Isofix child seat anchors.
The M4 is powered by a 1,5-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers 71kW and 138 Nm of torque to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The M4 is claimed to sip fuel at the rate of 7,2 l/100 km, translating to a CO2 emissions figure of 172 g/km.
The M4 retails for R189 999, which includes a 5 year/45 000km service plan and a 5 year/100 000km warranty.
