INEOS Automotive has introduced its latest 4X4 model, the INEOS Fusilier, a fully electric vehicle marking a significant step forward in INEOS’ commitment to a zero-emission lineup.
The launch event in London, led by INEOS Chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe, revealed that the Fusilier will not only include the previously disclosed all-electric powertrain but also a low-emission range-extender electric model currently under development. This additional option integrates a compact petrol engine that operates a generator to recharge the battery when external charging options are unavailable. Details on this alternative powertrain and its availability are anticipated by fall 2024.

Ratcliffe emphasised the importance of diversifying powertrain technologies to meet consumer demands and advance decarbonisation efforts. He highlighted the suitability of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for short distances and city use, while advocating for realistic expectations from both industry and governments regarding alternative technologies that could expedite the transition to lower emissions. The Fusilier’s additional powertrain option aims to offer reduced emissions alongside the necessary range and refuelling flexibility.
The development of the INEOS Fusilier, in collaboration with Magna Steyr, aims to set a new benchmark for customers. Taking inspiration from the Grenadier’s foundational characteristics, the new 4X4 model will feature a modern design and unique identity, at a slightly smaller size. Its construction will utilise a custom skateboard chassis, steel for the main body, and aluminium for the doors and other components.
INEOS’s partnership with Magna Steyr extends from the development of the Grenadier station wagon and Quartermaster pickup. Magna Steyr, recognised as one of the leading automotive suppliers and contract manufacturers globally, has a vast portfolio that includes producing ICE, hybrid, and electric vehicles for numerous brands. The Fusilier’s development program involves thorough testing on the Schöckl mountain in Austria, near Magna’s vehicle assembly plant in Graz.
Lynn Calder, CEO of INEOS Automotive, remarked on the significance of announcing their third vehicle line, underlining the company’s long-term vision in the automotive sector.
In addition to the Fusilier, INEOS Automotive showcased its dedication to future decarbonization solutions by presenting a Grenadier Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Demonstrator at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2023. This demonstration highlighted the readiness of hydrogen-powered 4X4 technology for production, pending the establishment of a sufficient refueling infrastructure to support commercial viability.
