After a long teaser campaign, the Lamborghini Urus “Super SUV” has been revealed.
Under the video (below) released by the Italian sports car manufacturer to show off its design, it states that, “The Urus is undoubtedly a Lamborghini, taking cues from the LM002 as well as the super sports cars that are fundamental to Lamborghini heritage: the Urus has outstanding proportions, adopting the two-thirds body, one-third window ratio of Lamborghini super sports cars.”
Thank goodness that we can’t see the relation to the comparably prehistoric and rather tank-like LM002. Rather, the new ‘Super SUV’ leans into the sports part of the acronym ‘sports utility vehicle’.
The Urus is powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine delivering 478kW of power and 850Nm of torque mated to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. It rides on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform (as does the Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7).
With its turbocharged engine and carbon fiber body, the Urus can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and can reach a maximum speed of 305 km/h (4km/h faster than the Bentley Bentayga), Lamborghini is confident that this is the world’s fastest SUV. Average fuel consumption is claimed at 12.7 L/100 km.
There will be six driving modes to cover different terrain and a permanent all-wheel-drive system with a central self-locking differential. The active torque vectoring via a rear differential distributes power to each individual wheel for better traction.
Wheel sizes will range from 21 to 23 inches and these come covered with Pirelli P Zero tyres. The five-seater Urus offers a 616-litre luggage compartment and according to Top Gear the rear is spacious despite the sloping roofline. Adaptive air suspension means that the ground clearance can be adjusted from 158- to 248mm.
The new Urus is expected to arrive in South Africa in the third quarter of 2018.
