Lexus launches LX570 locally

And for those of you who say that a Lexus can’t be a capable off-roader, think again. None of the Cruiser’s formidable array of off-road mechanical and electronic trickery has been discarded, and the LX570 has even more power at its disposal.

The LX570 has a permanent four-wheel-drive system that splits power 40/60 to the front and rear through a limited-slip centre differential that is also lockable for more serious terrain. A low-range transfer case is also fitted.

An advanced traction control system and a vehicle stability system keep things safe, while Crawl Control allows the vehicle to travel off-road in a controlled manner at very slow speeds (of 1, 3 and 5 km/h).

The capable chassis is equipped with an advanced electro-hydraulic suspension system with four-wheel Active height Control and Adaptive Variable Suspension. In normal terms this means that the vehicle can be raised or lowered via the suspension, and also adjusts the damping for comfort and handling. The independent double-wishbone front suspension allows for nine inches of travel, which should equate to good articulation. The rear suspension is a solid-axle configuration.

If you’ve always thought that the Land Cruiser 200’s 4,7-litre V8 is a little small and underpowered, then you may well enjoy the fact that the LX570 comes with a 5,7-litre (hence the name) V8. It produces 270 kW at 5600 r/min and 530 Nm at 3600 r/min and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that promises trademark Lexus refinement and low noise levels. A sequential shift mode allows the driver to select gears manually.

The styling of the Lexus differs from that of the Cruiser, while the interior has been given a more upmarket feel and even more gadgets, including: four-zone independent climate control, Lexus HDD navigation system, Mark Levinson sound system with 19 speakers and six disk DVD changer and rear-seat entertainment, keyless entry system with push-button start and more.

The LX570 allows for seating of eight occupants in three rows of comfortable seating. To keep all of these occupants safe the Lexus is equipped with 10 airbags, including side curtain airbags for all three rows.

The LX570 is covered by a four year/100 000km warranty and maintenance plan and retails for R1 085 000.
