Mark Cronje now behind the wheel of a Polo

Mark Cronje, the 2015 National Rally Champion and three times South African National Rally Champion, will tackle his sixth national rally championship season in a Volkswagen S2000 Polo. Cronje who piloted a Ford Fiesta to victory last year approached Volkswagen South Africa for a possible drive in a Polo for this season after ending his relationship with Ford.

Volkswagen Motorsport will provide Mark and his navigator Barry White the use of one of the S2000 Polo’s used by the works team in 2015 for the season.

“The car will be prepared and run by Thompson racing and Volkswagen will continue to provide technical support where required,” said Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport.

“We are excited to have the 2015 National Rally Champion driving one of our cars, and having had Mark as a competitor in the series, we know what a great driver he is. We are also confident that with Stuart Thompson’s technical expertise the Polo will do us proud in 2016,” added Rowe.

Matt Gennrich, General Manager: Group Communications at Volkswagen Group South Africa further added that Volkswagen has given Mark the Amarok for his daily commute for a year.

Mark has secured his own sponsorship to race the Volkswagen Polo S2000 for the season.

The 2016 National Rally Championship season kicks off in Welkom this weekend.
