We spent a day off-roading in one of the current models and to say it’s rough around the edges is putting it lightly. At the price, there’s absolutely nothing that can touch it off-road, but you’d really struggle to live with one day-to-day.

That’s likely what Mahindra hopes to improve with the all-new Thar.

The interior shots suggest a more modern interior, equipped with everything a car needs to be considered comfortable in 2020. More importantly, a redesign grants Mahindra an opportunity to work on overall safety, which also wasn’t up to scratch.

The initial unconfirmed reports suggest that the Thar will be based on the same all-new ladder-frame chassis that will underpin the next-generation Scorpio.

As for engines, Mahindra has a wide variety to choose from. It’s 2.2-litre mHawk is a sturdy unit, but the 1.5-litre diesel from the XUV 300 should also get the job done.

If Mahindra can get the comfort and safety levels up to par, there’s a very real chance the That could become a realistic Jimny rival.
