Will Mercedes-Benz axe the X-Class?

We don’t usually publish rumours on this website, but news of the Mercedes-Benz’ axing of the X-Class can’t be ignored, especially not that official sales figures are involved.

Last year, Mercedes-Benz sold a grand total of 16 700 X-Class units in Europe, Australia and South Africa. Last year Toyota sold more than 40 000 Hilux units in South Africa alone, so one could see why the German manufacturer might want to get rid of it as soon as possible.

Automotive News spoke to somebody at Mercedes, who claims Daimler is looking at reducing costs to optimise profits and the X-Class will be the most likely victim.

Nothing is confirmed at this stage, but since the X-Class is struggling to turn a profit, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mercedes officially calls it quits.
