The fast approach of the winter months may be a reason for many people to stay indoors, but adventurers know better! Winter can be the best time for off-roading, and the eastern Free State is a destination that is simply better when it’s covered in snow.
If you’ve been dreaming about a snowy holiday, a visit to Lesotho and the eastern Free State may just be the thing. The small-town charm of Clarens, Golden Gate, Bethlehem and Ficksburg are ideally explored from the even smaller Fouriesburg. It’s a central town that’s orientated towards tourism and hospitality, with various programmes and initiatives to reflect the region’s character.
Where to stay
Try the Fouriesburg Country Inn – a Leisure Wheels favourite. It’s only 10km from the Lesotho border, and the sandstone and Oregon pine building is warm, welcoming and exactly what you’d expect from the area. Use the Inn, established in 1892, as your base of exploration.
Regular visitors to the Country Inn in winter include RSG 4×4 Club’s Francois Rossouw. The club has been visiting the Inn for 16 years for its “cosy atmosphere, delicious food and personal service”.
