The Suzuki XL6 may not be the boldest MPV on the market, but it is by far one of the more practical ones at a very competitive price point. Moreover, it might just be the ideal open-road companion for you and your family…
If you’re planning a long-distance family trip, thoughts immediately drift to popular ladder-frame SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest. Perhaps even the occasional bakkie or three.
But there might just be an alternative lower down the price spectrum: the Suzuki XL6. With its roomy interior designed for six passengers, this multipurpose vehicle (MPV) ensures comfort for everyone, even on the longest journeys. The individual captain seats in the middle row are particularly good, providing a cosy and spacious feel that’s perfect for adults and kids alike. These seats can also slide and recline, so you can adjust them to your comfort level, whether you’re napping, chatting, or just enjoying the ride.
In his first XL6 long-term report, Kyle Kock, Road Test editor at sister publication CAR magazine, said of his experience of this unique seating arrangement:
“While some may bemoan the omission of an extra seat in the rear, parents familiar with the small-scale turf wars over who’s taking up the most seat space that’s waged by their offspring in the back of the car will no doubt welcome the individual seating arrangement. The only potential for back-seat bickering could arise from whose turn it is to charge their tablet, as the only USB port sits up front.”

Comfortable, welcome interior
One of any road trip’s standout features is a vehicle’s multimedia system. The XL6 comes equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that effortlessly connects (wirelessly) to your smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This means you can easily stream your favourite music, access navigation apps, or make hands-free calls, keeping everyone entertained and on the right route. The rear-view camera displayed on the screen also makes parking and reversing a breeze, which is especially handy in crowded rest areas or unfamiliar towns.

When it comes to the driving experience, the XL6 offers a smooth ride with its 77 kW/138 N.m 1.5-litre engine. However, the MPV’s four-speed automatic transmission could do with an extra gear. A fifth would aid a more responsive and efficient drive, which is particularly noticeable when you’re cruising on the highway with a full load of passengers and luggage.

Speaking of luggage, the XL6 doesn’t disappoint. The third-row seats can tilt forward and fold down, allowing for additional storage space. So, whether you’re packing camping gear, beach toys, or just the usual family necessities, there’s plenty of room to fit it all, thanks to 128/416 – 1 208 L of cargo space. Depending on the seat arrangement, of course.
The Suzuki XL6 not only offers practicality and comfort but also adds a touch of style with its daring design. From the large hexagonal grille to the sleek LED headlamps and chrome detailing, it’s a vehicle that stands out. Plus, the generous 180 mm of ground clearance and polished alloy wheels give it a robust look that’s ready for any adventure.
