In this 10-part series of the memorable road trip that was SUV Shootout 2024, we’ve already highlighted the six competitors and the route. From the third instalment, we started taking a closer look at how each of the former fared over the journey. Now it’s time to take a look at the seemingly underrated Mitsubishi Pajero Sport…

In 2021, Leisure Wheels’ sister publication, CAR magazine, awarded the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport top honours in the Large SUV/Crossover category at the 2021 Top 12 Best Buys awards. It was a worthy winner. The Triton-based SUV, especially in flagship, Exceed guise, was fitted with oodles of convenience and safety features as standard, was (and still is) commendable off-road, and offered good value for money (at the time, the range-topping model would set you back R689 995).
On SUV Shootout 2024, the Pajero Sport again proved its mettle among its competitors. An arrow in the Pajero Sport’s quiver, it is equipped with the Japanese automaker’s Super Select 4WD-II system.
Whereas some part-time four-wheel-drive setups’ 4H setting were designed to be engaged only when travelling off the beaten track, Mitsubishi’s allows the driver to engage 4H not only in these environments, but also for increased stability when driving on rain-soaked asphalt. (The Ford Everest Wildrak and Platinum also feature this functionality with their 4A mode).
Of course, when the roads less travelled get extra rough, there are 4HLc, which locks the centre differential, and, for more extreme off-roading, there is 4LLc (low range).

The Pajero Sport soldiers on as an admirable ladder-frame, 4×4 SUV, worthy of consideration were you in the market for a vehicle of this ilk. It feels its age, though — something that’s been said of several of the competitors; however, the Pajero Sport arguably the most. With the next-generation Triton having been revealed, here’s hoping a new Pajero Sport will follow soon.
