July 2019 Issue

Our cover feature this month focuses on American muscle versus the future of performance. Awesome, except… what does that mean? We’ll tell you what it means, it means we put the Jaguar I-Pace up against the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk in a race at Tarlton Raceway. The result was… well, you’ll have to read it and see.

Heard the phrase mentioning Putsonderwater? So have we. So we decided to take a drive there to find out if there’s anything happening there. Last reports say that this once blooming town is now a ghost town. We took a drive in a Mahindra XUV 300 and can now confirm… that yep, there’s nothing happening there.

Okay, that was a bit of an anti-climax, we’ll admit. There was nothing anti-climatic about this month’s tests, though: the BMW X5 xDrive30d and the Isuzu D-Max 3.0 TD 4×4 LX Arctic AT35. Wow!

We love hearing about competitions and fun events and this month we feature two: the Spirit of Amarok and the Simola Hillclimb. Read about why these two events should be on your to-do list.

Our Campsite review looks at the Riverside Country Club while our Retro Drive remembers the Volvo C202. In Gear we take a squizz at winter warmers – gear to keep you snug until the weather warms up – and stunts that failed, things you do not want to try at home.

There are two more features, too. We explore Banhine National Park not long after tropical cyclone Idai swept through the area, and Nick Yell took to two wheels and four, exploring South Africa’s back roads on a pair of motorbikes and in a Pajero.
